Considered as an old Italian favourite, sambuca originated in the country of Italy and became hugely popular after the World War II in the year 1945. The drink is a colourless liqueur made with anise, licorice and elderberries. It contains high sugar content and to balance the sweet flavour, coffee beans are usually chewed while consuming the drink.
The process of making sambuca begins with mixing elderberries, licorice and anise with ethanol. This mixture is left to infuse for 5 days and is stored in a warm place. It is distilled after which sugar syrup and anise distillate is mixed. Sambuca is then aged for 7-10 days in a dark place. The liqueur can be either enjoyed neat or used in a cocktail. It comes in two variants depending on the taste of licorice and anise- white sambuca and black sambuca with white sambuca being lighter and having an increased licorice taste.
