Mezcal Vs Tequila : Here's a breakdown of the two popular Mexican spirits!

Miniature bottles of spirits are a potent alcohol expression derived by subjecting grains to fermentation and distillation processes. Generally, spirits are classified into six: brandy, vodka, gin, whiskey, rum, and tequila.

Mezcal Vs. Tequila: Is there Any Difference?

Mezcal and tequila share similar features. Ultimately, however, local regulations clearly set them apart from each other by about a hundred miles.

As per Mexican regulation, tequila may only be produced in Jalisco, whereas Mezcal brands may be produced in other provinces outside of Jalisco. Another glaring difference between tequila and mezcal is what agave plant goes into each spirit and how these are processed. Tequila agave makes use only of the blue agave plant whereas there are generally two types of mezcal. The first type is made with 100% agave plants, that is, any of the agave plants permitted under state regulations. The second type is made using 80% agave and 20% other sugars.

Miniature Tequila bottles typically come with an age expression. Tequila Blanco (Silver) is unaged tequila. Tequila Gold (Joven) is made using tequila blanco infused with artificial flavourings. Tequila Reposado is tequila aged anywhere between 2 months to 12 months. Sierra Tequila Reposado is expressed at 38% ABV and bottled with a sombrero for its cap. Tequila anejo is vintage tequila aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 1 year. Mezcal is similarly classified, and shares three categories with tequila: Abacado (also Joven or Blanco), Reposado, and Anejo.

Mezcal Tasting Profile

Mezcal generally has a richer, more complex, and more flavourful profile compared to tequila. This can be largely attributed to the greater flexibility its producers have in terms of what goes inside each bottle.

Smoky mezcal is preferred over the harsher tasting profile of tequila. Mezcal La Penca is a mezcal with worm. In fact, this marketing gimmick does not infest a bottle of mezcal with worm at all. Instead, the so-called “worms” are insect larvae. Contrary to what you may have heard about tequila not embodying worms as mezcal does, check out Tequila Jose Cuervo to dare yourself and your friends to the same wormy treat.
